Product category introduction

Professional OWON virtual oscilloscope category introduction

An OWON virtual oscilloscope is an ultra-thin USB box — 18 mm thick, powered from the USB port — that uses your computer for its display, processing and storage. You get a full oscilloscope on a big screen with easy screenshots, data export and SCPI automation, for a fraction of the price of a benchtop instrument. Two families cover every need: the classic VDS1000/2000/3000 series (25–100 MHz, from €90) and the new VDS6000 series with 1 GSa/s sampling, 10 Mpts memory, a switchable 8/12/14-bit ADC on the “A” models, USB-C and optional Wi-Fi.

  • On a budget: the classic VDS series starts at €90 for the VDS1022 — the cheapest way to put a genuine OWON scope on a bench. All models are USB bus powered with X-Y, FFT and multi-trigger in the free Windows software.
  • Resolution & performance: the VDS6000 series brings 100 MHz, 1 GSa/s and 10 Mpts on every model, and the “A” versions add a switchable 8 / 12 / 14-bit ADC — 8-bit keeps the full 100 MHz, 14-bit trades bandwidth (20 MHz) for far cleaner amplitude detail.
  • Operating system: the classic VDS software runs on Windows; the VDS6000 software runs on Windows and macOS, with USB-C, LAN and optional Wi-Fi, and SCPI / USBTMC / LXI / LabVIEW on both families.
  • Floating or noisy circuits: the VDS1022I has an isolated USB port — it protects your PC and cleans up measurements when the circuit under test shares grounds.
  • Channels: each family offers 2- and 4-channel models; the classic series adds a multi-function channel for external trigger or Pass/Fail output.

FAQ

Questions about OWON virtual oscilloscopes

Technical selection guidance for choosing the right PC-based oscilloscope.

What is a virtual (PC-based) oscilloscope?

A virtual oscilloscope is a compact USB instrument that contains the analog front-end, ADC and memory of a real oscilloscope, but uses your computer for the display, controls and storage. You connect it over USB, run the OWON software, and your whole monitor becomes the oscilloscope screen — with easy screenshots, data export and remote-control (SCPI) support. It is not a simulation: the measurement hardware is real, only the screen is your PC.

What is the difference between the VDS1000/2000/3000 series and the VDS6000 series?

The classic VDS1000/2000/3000 series spans 25 to 100 MHz with 8-bit resolution and Windows software, starting at €90. The VDS6000 series is the newer platform: every model has 100 MHz bandwidth, 1 GSa/s sampling and 10 Mpts memory, the "A" models add an ADC you can switch between 8, 12 and 14 bits, connectivity is USB-C with a standard LAN port and optional Wi-Fi, and the software runs on macOS as well as Windows. The two-channel VDS6102 and VDS6102A also have a built-in 5 MHz function generator.

Which operating systems are supported?

The classic VDS1000/2000/3000 software is a free Windows download. The VDS6000 series has free software for Windows and macOS. Both families support SCPI for remote control; the VDS3102, VDS3104 and every VDS6000 model also work with LabVIEW, and the VDS6000 series adds USBTMC, LXI and raw-socket compatibility.

What does the USB isolation on the VDS1022I do?

The VDS1022I galvanically isolates its USB connection from the measurement front-end. This protects your computer if something goes wrong in the circuit under test, breaks ground loops that would otherwise add noise to the measurement, and allows a higher 400 Vpk-pk input range instead of the standard 40 Vpk-pk. If you measure on mains-referenced or floating circuits, choose the VDS1022I.

Do I need a power adapter for a virtual oscilloscope?

Usually not: all OWON virtual oscilloscopes are powered from the USB bus. An adapter is only needed for the classic series when you control it over the optional LAN interface (the adapter and power cord are then included), and the VDS6000 uses a single USB-C cable for both data and power.
