Take the analyser to the signal

A handheld spectrum analyser exists to solve a problem a benchtop instrument cannot: the signal you need to measure is rarely in the laboratory. It is at the top of a mast, in a plant room, on a factory floor or somewhere in a square kilometre of city, and by the time you have brought it back to a bench through a long lossy cable you are no longer measuring the thing you were sent to investigate.

Carrying the instrument to the antenna removes that cable. You characterise a system at its feed point, with its real terminations and its real interference environment. With a tracking generator or a vector network analyser fitted you also measure return loss, filter response and cable faults in situ, on the installed hardware, rather than on a bench substitute.

OWON builds four handheld families. The HSA2000 combines a spectrum analyser, an oscilloscope and a multimeter in one hand for general field work. The HSA015/032 is the entry analyser for signal-presence and channel-occupancy checks. The HSA1000 is the survey instrument, with 1 Hz resolution bandwidth, ±0.7 dB amplitude accuracy and a standard GPS receiver. The HSA3000-R adds real-time analysis to 20 GHz.

Two capabilities matter more in the field than anywhere else. Battery operation — four to six hours on the HSA1000 and HSA015/032, USB Type-C and power-bank operation on the HSA3000-R — means a full survey without mains, an extension reel or a generator. And GPS geo-tagging, standard on the HSA1000 and HSA3000-R, turns a sequence of readings into a search: log amplitude against position, and an interferer emerges from the data instead of from guesswork. It also gives a survey record an auditable position and timestamp.

The field-survey workhorse: benchtop measurement performance in a 2.5 kg rubber-armoured handheld with a standard GPS receiver, so every trace carries the position it was taken from.

OWON HSA2000 Series

Spectrum analyser, oscilloscope and 4½-digit multimeter in a single handheld. The cheapest way into RF measurement in this range, and the one to carry when you do not know yet whether the fault is RF, a waveform or a voltage.

OWON HSA015 / HSA032

The entry-level handheld, sharing the HSA1000 chassis, screen and battery but with a simpler RF front end. Choose it when you need a portable analyser for signal presence, channel occupancy and rough level checks rather than close-in phase-noise work.

  • 9 kHz to 1.5 or 3.2 GHz, with or without tracking generator
  • 10 Hz minimum RBW (the HSA1000 reaches 1 Hz)
  • −160 dBm DANL, 20 dB preamplifier
  • Phase noise < −80 dBc/Hz at 10 kHz offset
  • Total amplitude accuracy < 1.5 dB
  • No GPS receiver — the HSA1000 is the geo-tagging model

Choosing between them

Start with the measurement

  • Is a signal present, and on what channel? — HSA015 / HSA032
  • Mixed RF, waveform and voltage faults in the field — HSA2000
  • Site survey, EMC pre-compliance, accurate levels — HSA1000
  • Intermittent or frequency-hopping interference — HSA3000-R, for the real-time capture
  • Antenna and feeder testing on the tower — HSA3000-R with the VNA option

Then check three things

  • Frequency ceiling — buy above your highest harmonic of interest, not just your carrier
  • GPS — standard on HSA1000 and HSA3000-R, absent on HSA015/032
  • Tracking generator — needed for return loss and filter response; a variant on HSA1000, an option on HSA3036-R and HSA3075-R, unavailable above 7.5 GHz
  • Close-in phase noise — −106 dBc/Hz on HSA1000 against −80 dBc/Hz on HSA015/032, which decides whether you can resolve a small signal near a large one
